The Gardener’s Prayer

Dec 29, 1992
Psalm 131
My grandma taught me everything
that I should have to know.
She taught me how to work the soil,
to make my garden grow.
She taught me how to plant it,
and how to spot the weeds,
And give it everything a garden needs.
I had my garden planted;
The sun began to shine.
The garden, it began to grow,
and it was lookin’ fine.
But now I have to travel;
I haven’t got the time,
To stop and care,
and watch the flowers grow.
Just let me be the gard’ner,
to help the flowers bloom,
To cut away the deadwood,
and make the others room.
I’ll plant and prune and water,
and pull out all the weeds.
Just let me be the gard’ner…
If I were a rich man,
I could plant a garden here.
And hire a man to tend it,
until the harvest’s near.
But I’d miss out on the blessing
of watching flowers grow.
Don’t want to be a rich man…
Just let me be the gard’ner,
to help the flowers bloom,
To cut away the deadwood,
and make the others room.
I’ll plant and prune and water,
and pull out all the weeds.
Just let me be the gard’ner…
Oh Lord I’m not ambitious
to build a kingdom here.
I don’t concern my heart with things
too wonderful for me.
My heart’s at peace within me;
I’ve quieted my soul…
Just let me be the gard’ner…
Just let me be the gard’ner,
to help the flowers bloom,
To cut away the deadwood,
and make the others room.
I’ll plant and prune and water,
and pull out all the weeds.
Just let me be the gard’ner…
When I reach that blessed place
that’s on the other side,
Maybe I can settle down,
and maybe have some time.
Oh Lord, it’s all a mystery;
I don’t know what I’ll see,
But if you need a gard’ner…
Just let me be the gard’ner,
to help the flowers bloom,
To cut away the deadwood,
and make the others room.
I’ll plant and prune and water,
and pull out all the weeds.
Just let me be the gard’ner…
Just let me be the gard’ner, oh Lord
Just let me be the gard’ner, oh Lord.
