The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
She took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.
God had warned Adam and Eve of the one thing they needed to avoid. He told them what would happen if they didn’t follow these instructions. But then the father of lies entered into the picture to mislead them, and now they had a choice to make. They could believe God, the One who had created them and made this beautiful place for them, or they could believe a lie which contradicted what He had so clearly warned them about. They made the wrong choice. And just as God had warned, they died.
Our nation, the country we love; the place of our birth – a large segment of this nation and especially the leaders who are trying so hard to take us down wrong paths – we must take Adam’s experience as instructive for our lives today. If all we’re willing to listen to is lies, then that’s very likely what we’ll end up believing. And this is never a happy, positive situation.
Lord, I plead for Your mercy on Your people, subject to so many wrong choices of the nations in which we live, and of the leaders who have been placed over us. I pray that You will set boundaries beyond which these leaders will not be permitted to pass. Those who transgress the law from their positions of power, trampling on the interests and well being of those they were supposed to be serving, thinking that they themselves are safe and protected, free from scrutiny, somehow above the law; Holy Father, in Your grace and lovingkindness, bring down these evil men, and let them experience the consequences of their crimes.
