Explanation of the data, using the following data point as an example:
703BC [9/10] Jupiter triple +32 (10/12, 12/24, 6/5) 70 7 0 7 Sabbath year, ending 1st seven of 71st Jubilee period

The first info shown for a data point is the year (703BC in this case), expressed in our present-day BC/AD system. This is the year of the first conjunction of a double or triple (10/12/703BC). The last conjunction occurs in the following year (6/5/702BC). The middle conjunction of a triple can occur in either year, depending on whether it happens before or after the 1st of January (in this case it’s in the same year as the first conjunction, on 12/24/703BC). With our present day January-to-December years, and also with Hebrew Spring-to-Spring years (beginning with Hebrew month 1), a triple conjunction will always be split between two years like this. But Hebrew Fall-to-Fall years, beginning with month 7 at the Hebrew New Year, seem to be set up with triple conjunctions in mind. With Fall-to-Fall years all three conjunctions occur in the same year, as long as the first conjunction of the triple is at or after the Hebrew New Year. So when the year is listed as “703BC”, take this to mean “the Hebrew Fall-to-Fall year which begins in 703BC”, and it will match up more nicely with the triple conjunctions.

703BC [9/10] Jupiter triple +32 (10/12, 12/24, 6/5) 70 7 0 7 Sabbath year, ending 1st seven of 71st Jubilee period

The date in brackets following the year is the date of that year’s Hebrew New Year, as computed by www.torahcalendar.com. If instead there are just hyphens, this means that the year is just a placeholder, probably for a Jubilee year, and that the year isn’t marked by any double or triple conjunctions.

After the date in brackets is the identity of the conjunction marking this year. “Jupiter triple” as in the example means “a triple conjunction of Jupiter with Regulus”. If it says “Jupiter d/triple”, that means a conjunction that’s on the borderline between double and triple. If it says “Jupiter s/double”, that means a conjunction that’s on the borderline between double and single. The choice of triple, double, or d/triple for these borderline cases is rather subjective. Though I’ve tried to be consistent, I haven’t attempted to rigorously define the boundary line.

Next is “+” or “-” followed by a number. This indicates how many days before or after the New Year the first conjunction is at its fullest. “+32” means it’s at its fullest 32 days after the New Year. “-2” would mean it’s at its fullest 2 days before the New Year. “At its fullest” can be a rather subjective measurement, but for this data I’ve defined it to mean when the specified planet is closest to, without having yet passed, an imaginary line from Regulus to the nearby star Algieba, as seen at 3am in Jerusalem. This is a somewhat arbitrary definition. So if you’re looking for cases of conjunctions at the Hebrew New Year, it’s good to consider a range of candidates, like maybe all those occurring at -5 to +5. Other ranges might also be of interest. +13 plus or minus 5 will give you conjunctions starting near the first full moon of the New Year. +29 plus or minus 5 will give you conjunctions starting near the new moon of the month after the New Year.

Next is two or three dates in parentheses. These are the dates of the starting and ending conjunctions, and for a triple, also the middle conjunction. For a double, one of the two may be an extended conjunction that lasts a month or more. The date shown for a case like this is just an approximate center date for the conjunction. More than once I’ve seen a case where the date on which the extended conjunction first begins seems to be meaningful. That information is not given here, so for such cases you may need to check out the details in Stellarium.

Next are four rather abstract looking numbers. These are used to keep track of the relationship to Sabbath and Jubilee years. First is the number of complete Jubilee cycles up to and including this year, if we count from the first Jubilee cycle (plus one year) of Daniel Gregg’s chronology. If the year is a Jubilee year, this is its number. If it’s not a Jubilee year, the current Jubilee cycle is this number plus one. Second is which year (1-49) of the current Jubilee cycle this is. Third is how many Sabbath cycles or “sevens” (0-6) have been completed in the current Jubilee cycle. The current Sabbath cycle is this number plus one. And last is which year (1-7) of the current Sabbath cycle it is.

For Sabbath years (the last year of a seven) and for years that begin a new seven, these four numbers are followed by a prose description of their significance. For example, the sample data describes “70 7 0 7” as “Sabbath year, ending 1st seven of 71st Jubilee period.

About Sabbath and Jubilee years
I know of two main contenders for the correct placement of Sabbath years, one proposed by Benedict Zuckermann (1818-1891) and the other by Daniel Gregg (www.torahtimes.org/book/). Daniel Gregg has also reconstructed the Jubilee years all the way back to the time of Genesis. I haven’t fully settled on which system to follow, but for this chart I’ve just chosen one in order to proceed with investigation, with the hope that the astronomical observations will provide evidence to either confirm or correct my choice. What I’m following for this chart is the Gregg placement of Jubilee years, but shifted by one year to match the Zuckermann placement of Sabbath years. To interpret this data according to the pure Gregg chronology, the four Sabbath/Jubilee numbers need to be adjusted. Add one to the second number. If that makes it 50, wrap it around to 1 and increment the first number. Also add one to the fourth number. If that makes it 8, wrap it around to 1 and increment the third number.

Note that some take the Jubilee to be a 49-year cycle and some take it to be 50. The system I’m following takes it to be a 49-year cycle, with the Jubilee in the 50th year, which also is the first year of the following Jubilee cycle. This interpretation seems likely to be correct because 1) A cycle of 50 years would interrupt the continuity of the ongoing 7-year Sabbath cycles. 2) Taking the 50th-year Jubilee to be the first year of the following week of years is analogous to taking the 50th-day Feast of Weeks to be the first day of the following week, as described in Leviticus 23:15-16. Just as the 50th-day celebration doesn’t interrupt the regular flow of 7-day weeks, there should similarly be no need for a 50th-year celebration to interrupt the regular flow of 7-year weeks of years.

And on and on we could go. Interesting to see the Jubilee of 2036AD marked by a triple conjunction of Saturn with Regulus. This doesn’t happen very often. If we group the Jubilees into sevens, it’s interesting also to see that this Jubilee begins a new seven of Jubilees, and marks the completion of the 18th seven of Jubilees since creation (126/7 = 18). The first conjunction of the triple of Saturn which marks this Jubilee happens about the beginning of the next month after the Hebrew New Year – but it gets more interesting when we look closely. About 3am of Oct 1 we see Venus rise in conjunction with Saturn. Then the following night, about 3am of Oct 2, we see Venus rise in conjunction with Regulus.

Is there anything special about these dates? Looking to TorahCalendar.com we find these to be the early morning of days 10 and 11 of month 7 – the nights preceding and following Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It’s as if Saturn has tried to reach Regulus by the Day of Atonement. He’s tried with all that’s in him, and found that he couldn’t do it. He’s missed the mark. But as the Day of Atonement begins, Venus comes alongside him, and that transaction which had seemed impossible, unreachable – we see the following night that Venus has completed it on his behalf.

See www.torahtimes.org/articles/The Day of Atonement.pdf for some good information on the significance of this Day. It’s a day of cleansing from our sinfulness. The day is observed every year on day 10 of month 7 (Lev 16:29-30), looking ahead to a future Yom Kippur which will bring our ultimate cleansing, at the Messiah’s return. “On this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the LORD, you will be clean from all your sins.” Leviticus 16:30

  1. […] (See https://snofriacus.wordpress.com/2012/11/19/conjunctions-of-saturn-jupiter-and-mars-with-regulus for the full conjunction data) Double and triple conjunctions with a star can happen to all of the planets whose orbits are farther from the Sun than Earth’s orbit. Three of these – Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars – are bright enough to serve as signs in the sky. For the ordinary observer the others – Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto – show up only in more subtle ways, just influencing the paths of the visible planets. They serve to fine-tune the celestial clock, placing the conjunctions of the visible planets just exactly where and when the Designer wants them to be. My understanding of these things has developed gradually – first only being aware of Jupiter’s conjunctions with Regulus, then noticing that Saturn too must be included in order to fill out the pattern of correlations. Recently a similar thing happened with Mars. In order to make the best sense of some events in 500-something BC, I had to start paying attention to conjunctions of Mars along with those of Jupiter and Saturn. So I’ve been working on expanding my database of double and triple conjunctions to include the planet Mars, and today I used this to take a fresh look at our current times. I have to pass on the amazing correlations that I now see in 1948: 1947AD Mars triple (11/28/1947, 2/15/1948, 5/16/1948) […]
